Top Reads of 2019

01

Heroine by Mindy McGinnis

A star softball player who seems to have it all, life takes an unexpected turn after a horrible accident. This novel explores the dangers of addiction and drugs, and how they can change people down to their very core. Dark, heavy, and so important.

02

The Poppy War by R.F. Kuang

Set in a fantasy world rich with Chinese history, The Poppy War explores the viciousness and brutality of war, and the cruelty of the human race. This novel had me questioning my own moral code of right and wrong alongside our main character Rin, and kept my heart pounding.

03

Sadie by Courtney Summers

Harsh in its reality, this book explores the lengths a girl will go to when she's lost everything. Sadie is broken glass, all the sharp deadly edges pointing outwards, and there's no anticipating what she will do to get revenge for her sister's death. My heart hurt reading this one.

04

The Risk by Elle Kennedy

Enemies-to-lovers chemistry, witty sarcasm, banter, all topped off with real emotional backstory, Elle Kennedy brings her characters to life in this story. I laughed, I cried, and I loved every second of Brenna and Jake's story.

House of Earth and Blood by Sarah J. Maas

I loved Maas' Throne of Glass series, and am so excited she is starting a new fantasy series! She is a pro at writing complex, complicated characters and seamlessly intertwining multiple storylines. I cannot wait to see what she has in store for us with the first book in the new Crescent City series.

02

The Midnight Lie by Marie Rutkowski

I am a huge fan of Rutkowski's The Winner's Curse series. Rutkowski has perfect pacing and story progression, with flushed-out characters. The themes she focuses on are some of my favorite: trickery, deceit, action, a smidge of romance, and the importance of freedom. I  cannot wait to return to this world she has created with this new spinoff series. Might be time for a reread of Winner's...

03

Be Not Far From Me by Mindy McGinnis

Mindy McGinnis is one of my top authors - I love her novels The Female of the Species and Heroine. However, I did struggle with her novel This Darkness Mine. McGinnis may be a hit-and-miss author for me, but her hits really pack a punch, and I will continue reading her novels. She always manages to find that bit of light in a whole lot of darkness.

04

The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes by Suzanne Collins

I didn't appreciate everything that Collins tackled in The Hunger Games during my first read. I definitely did though on my reread. Oppression and government control, rebellion and fighting for freedom, war - all of this takes a toll. Collins handles this with the sensitivity and brutal honesty it deserves. I cannot wait to return to this world she has created.
